Railroading
The Salute to Southern Iowa Coal Mining and Railroading will be Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Penn Central Mall in Oskaloosa. Hugh Hammond, Director, said, "The coal mining and railroading is a big part of our Southern Iowa history and culture. Last year the Penn Central Model Railroad Club drew a large audience and we are pleased to have John Bandstra's group back."
There also will be free car caravans to former mining sites such as Buxton and Evans beginning at 8:30 a.m. Plus, there will be a railroad walk pointing out the location and history of rail lines in Oskaloosa. There will be workshops and lectures throughout the day. A complete schedule of the day's events will be posted at a later date.
"This year Nathan (Tim) Pinnick from the Chicago area will conduct a workshop. Tim had relatives in Buxton and is extremely well versed on the history of the area. Post card and artifact expert John Jacobs will again display his very extensive collection. We are honored to have Doug Wilson from Knoxville present. Doug probably has more knowledge of coal mining in this area than anyone else. Southern Iowa coal mining has been a lifelong study for Doug. My long term goal is to develop a Southern Iowa Historical Driving Route sponsored by a number of organizations. All of the former mines would be marked and identified so travelers and tourists from out of state could learn about and appreciate our history and culture," Hammond said.
Penn Central Model Railroad Club meets every 1st and 3rd monday evening from 7-8 pm. Anyone is welcome to attend. The trains run every 1st and 3rd Saturday at the clubroom in the mall from 10 - 2 pm. Everyone is welcome to stop in. If you have any questions, please call Wood N Stuff at 673-4757.
